The Bible Society has ordained that this Sunday is "Bible Sunday". Don't know what was wrong with the old tradition of having it on the second Sunday of Advent, apart from the fact that with everything else in Advent it gets swamped by the approaching behemoth that is the modern Christmas. But anyway, for those celebrating it this weekend, over the next couple of days I'll be posting various resources we are using this weekend... Here's a responsive psalm to start with:
The law of the Lord is perfect, strengthening the soul.
The promises of the Lord are trustworthy, offering insight to all.
The signposts of the Lord are straightforward, bringing joy to life.
The commands of the Lord are clear, giving light to walk by.
The fear of the Lord is right and good, enduring for ever.
The decisions of the Lord are sure and altogether unquestionable.
His word is more precious than gold,
than a bank vault full of gold;
His word is sweeter than strawberries in summer,
Tastier than ripe red strawberries
God’s word warns us when we’re on dangerous ground
And directs us to hidden treasures.
What man can spot his own mistakes?
What woman can tell when she is fooling herself?
Father, forgive my hidden faults.
Lord, keep your servant from deliberate error.
May my sins not rule over me
So I will be blameless before you.
May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my mind be pleasing in your sight,
O Lord, my Rock and my Rescuer. AMEN

Comments
always like to see if i can make some comment on bible text.
Psalm19:
v.1
In the bible the firmament is a solid, dome shaped structure in which the stars were placed. it separated the waters and the heavens above .windows in the firmament were opened whenever it rained?
(from the flat earth bible, (RJ Schadewald))
v.4-6
Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun.
His going forth is from the end of the heaven and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
It appears from this verse that the sun moves around the earth?????
v.7 The law of the lord is perfect.
is the law of the lord perfect?
psalm 18.30 yes
psalm 19.7 yes
Hebrews 8:6,7. NO
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant which was established upon better promises. for if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
v9 "the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever."
should we fear god?
"""yes"""

Re the perfection of the law... this is from the perspective of the Psalmist... not necessary the eternal perspective of God... remember the law refered to is the Torah which was not intended to be eternally binding.
As for the fear of the Lord... C.S. Lewis' analogy of Aslan not being a "tame" lion... therefore he isn't "safe" but he is "Good"... this holds true with God, if we really believe him to be omnipotent... he certainly is not tame... therefore we should fear him... but he wants us to be in a relationship with him that means that the fear is outweighed by love.
I doubt Joe public in the pulpit does understand what you and I think Gen; says. I could name plenty who would call you names and for your removal if you tried. Perhaps that's why we never here the words,
" I know you believe the Bible is the word of God and can not be altered by me or anyone except the Lord himself"
I know you have believe the words in Gen from you were a child
*BUT* I'm going to tell you the truth "because I know this is what it really means."
Hi come back I didn't mean it.
This idea of reading one thing which is the way it has been for generations and now it really means a dozen other things, covering all angles is getting a bit hard to take.
With regard to all the new understandings & interpretations, are the various churches in accord???.
I really don't think the evangelicals in our village would agree with you. I know many who would not accept your modernistic view simply because it is not what the bible says. I dare not call my mother in law Sadie, a "flat earther" under any circumstances
We continually come upon modernistic views without an explanationa as to how they came about, and who decided they now apply. A case in-point
If love overcomes fear what need do we have of fear, is this another defect initiated by God to cause confusion, fear or wonderment?
I'm sure you are familiar with the principle "Occam's razor" in english it means, "entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity" or " the simple explanation is the better"
some one should have told his nibs or maybe he knows but forgot?
Finally, last but not least, as David Frost used to say, the Archbishop says to the Pope "there may be trouble ahead" the Holy Inquisition or now the "Doctrine of the faith" is acceptable to him. Although the Bishop of Fulham the Right RevJohn Broadhurst, chairman of the "Forward in Faith" which opposes women Bishops hailed it as a decisive moment and declared that approx;1,000 English Clergy would go. "Trouble at mill"
With regard to FEAR and LOVE as a child I feared my father so much,I cared for him until his death but love I'm not sure. Maybe
Snauzer
As for the dynamic of fear and love, it is a very, very fine balancing act... and one that NI fathers and sons (and probably those in other societies too) have not been very good at striking for generations... My relationship with my father might be very close to your description of your own... The question is, does it change our relationship with our children and with our heavenly father?
I could make further comment for debate, but am aware your time is more valuable than mine.
Maybe just one, regarding your word "metaphorical"
I hope the Pope and Arch Bishop can understand the meaning of Transubstantiation, bearing in mind the Pope really believes we eat the flesh and drink the blood of Christ during communion. see Times Wed 21 & Thurs 22nd.
I predict trouble at mill.
